About the Panel
Sarah Kelly is a Professor and Head of the QUT Graduate School of Business, an experienced commercial lawyer and non-executive director across sport, tourism, technology, and professional services sectors. Deputy Chair of the Brisbane Lions AFL Football Club and Tourism and Events Queensland.
Sarah is globally known for her expertise in the sports field, and recent published work includes health impacts of esports, sports integrity, mega-event legacy evaluation, scandal and sponsorship, sports diplomacy, and women’s sports commercialisation.
Associate Professor Divya Mehta is the co-domain lead, Sports Systems Domain, Centre for Data Science at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT).
A biostatistician and geneticist, A/Prof Mehta leads large government and industry-funded projects integrating different types of data in athletes, veterans, and emergency responders to better understand health, well-being, and performance under stressful situations.
A/Prof Mehta had published over 100 papers and is a Chief Investigator of several grants (>$14M funding) including an Australian Institute of Sport grant “Practice Enhancement: A Data Science Kiosk for Sports” to develop a web-based self-help tool to link users to resources including experts in data science and sports, software, and guidelines on how to tackle the problem, and relevant training materials.
A/Prof Mehta spearheads health projects within the 2023 QUT-led CSIRO Next generation graduate program in Emerging technologies and AI: Creating the Skillsets, Toolsets and Mindsets for Transformation, Innovation, &/or Trajectory 2032” led by Prof Mengersen, in collaboration with UNSW and over 20 industry partners. This will build capacity and train students in sports data science.
Dr Simon Denman is an academic within the school of Electrical Engineering and Robotics and co-leads the Complex Data Analysis programme within the Centre of Data Science at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Dr Denman actively researches in the fields of computer vision and machine learning and has published over 150 papers considering problems including action and event recognition, trajectory prediction, video analytics, biometrics, and medical signal processing. He has worked with industry partners across the aviation, defence, medical, agricultural and sports sectors, and is an investigator on current sports-centric projects including the Australian Institute of Sport grant “Practice Enhancement: A Data Science Kiosk for Sports” project, and the 2023 QUT-led CSIRO Next generation graduate program in Emerging technologies and AI: Creating the Skillsets, Toolsets and Mindsets for Transformation, Innovation, & Trajectory 2032”.
Dr Rian Crowther is the sport performance lead at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), he oversees the elite athlete program and is responsible for developing performance-based research activities with faculty partners. The evolution of the digital sports landscape and the current engagement of traditional physical sports is an area of particular interest to Rian in his current role.
Prior to this, Rian was a Sport Scientist at Cricket Australia, where for 13 years where he was responsible for incorporating movement science disciplines and technology innovation in national programs. Rian balanced his work commitments with PhD studies at QUT in skill acquisition. Through this research Rian sought to understand how players’ movement solutions would adapt to changes in the surrounding environment.
Rian has published eight peer review articles and through a skill acquisition perspective, is passionate about technology advancements in sports to capture new information, provide a different perspective on sports performance, and open increased avenues of participation.
